Manchester United news: England boss Gareth Southgate added to managerial shortlist for Old Trafford job
England boss Gareth Southgate has been added to a shortlist of potential candidates to be the next Manchester United manager, according to reports.Mauricio Pochettino remains the club’s first-choice to take over, but United are concerned he will remain at Tottenham.As an alternative, the Old Trafford club are said to be sounding out former Aston Villa and Middlesbrough defender Southgate, Sky Sportsreport.2

Southgate is a shock candidate for the Manchester United job

Following Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in December, club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought in to steady the ship and has so far overseen five wins from five matches ahead of Sunday’s trip to Tottenham.Southgate signed a new contract to stay on as England manager until the end of the 2022 World Cup having led England to the semi-final of the same competition last summer. His last role in club management was at Middlesbrough for three years from 2006 onwards, and he was in charge when Boro were relegated from the Premier League in 2008/09.Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone and Zinedine Zidane,, who guided Real Madrid to three successive European Cups, are also on the list drawn up by United chiefs, who are desperate to resolve the managerial situation ahead of next season.2

Zidane remains out of work since leaving Los Blancos at the end of last season, and is believed to be tempted by the opportunity to manage Manchester United.
